Our Club

40 years a growin

Young Irelands Gaelic Football Club first became affilliated with the Yorkshire County board in 1968. It was born out of the determination of one Charlie Beirne (RIP). The Leitrim native a GAA man through and through recognised there was enough players between the former St. Peter's club of Middlesborough and the immigrant trail to Leeds to add to the 2 existing clubs in Leeds.

Together will Henry Kenny and Harry Scullion the Young Irelands Club was born. Throughout the '70's Young Irelands were a successful and dominant force in Yorkshire football, reaching 3 All Britain provincial finals only to fall against London opposition. In 1979 our club made history when they became the first club from North of Britain to play at Gaelic Park New York.

In 1983 our club helped form St Benedict's as part of the underage structure, who are now a fully fledged club in their own right and to whom we enjoy many the battle against. In 2008 the club has also aided and abetted the formation of the very successful Cu Chulainns club in Newcastle.

The club became a home from home for those early immigrants as it still does today, helping in anyway it can for those who choose Leeds as their destination.
